Anosognosia
Anosognosia means “To not know a disease” in Greek, a common symptom of serious mental illnesses, perhaps the most difficult to understand for those who have never experienced it. Our brain continuously updates our sense of self as we go through life, but this updating process requires the frontal lobe to organize new information, develop a revised narrative, and remember the new self-image. Brain imaging studies have shown that this crucial area of the brain can be damaged by schizophrenia and bipolar disorder as well as by diseases like dementia.
Made in collaboration with FASMI (Friends and Allies of Seriously Mentally Ill) this series of short videos explores the experience of living with serious mental illness from various perspectives–that of caregivers, people living with it, treatment professionals and legal experts.
